Multicultural Families Workshop - Strategies
for Raising Our Children with Culture(s)
December 10, 2005
Lawerence Tech University, Southfield, MI
Over 40 people were in attendance for CAPA's first ever workshop
geared toward parenting multi-racial families. This program
introduced ten tools and practical strategies for incorporating
culture into a multicultural lifestyle. It provided tips for
teaching children a second language, whether the parents speak
it or not.
Many families within CAPA are already multi-racial whether
by marriage or adoption, but all of them learned new skills
to bringing in Asian culture in unexpected ways into normal
routines.
Who ever thought of dressing up like a bag of rice for Halloween?
Or hanging red envelopes on the Christmas Tree? How about making
felt "play dim sum" pieces for the play kitchen in
everyone's playroom?
Frances Kai-Hwa Wang has thought of these things and a thousand
more -- all were amazed by her creativity, energy and love
for her family and respect for it's beginnings and unique culture.
Thank you, Frances for sharing generously with us and thanks
to everyone who attended.
